From the website: 'Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. This can be caused by alcohol and some drugs, but usually it is the result of a viral infection.
Hepatitis A, B, C are the most common types of the virus. Symptoms are similar and may include a short, mild, flu-like illness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, itchy skin. Your GP or doctor at a sexual health clinic can diagnose hepatitis by carrying out blood tests. A vaccine is available for A and B types of the virus.
Hepatitis A
It is possible to become infected through eating or drinking contaminated food or water. The hepatitis virus is found in faeces. It can be passed on if even a tiny amount of faeces from a person with hepatitis A comes into contact with another person's mouth.
You can be immunised for hepatitis A with a single injection in the arm which gives you protection for a year. A second booster injection at 6 to 12 months gives you protection for up to 10 years.
Hepatitis B
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is very common worldwide. It is very infectious.
Both hepatitis B and C virus can be spread by unprotected penetrative sex (anus, vagina or mouth), sex which draws blood, sharing contaminated needles, using non-sterilised equipment for tattooing, acupuncture or body piercing, from an infected mother to her baby (during delivery), through a blood transfusion in a country where blood is not tested for the virus. It is considered rare for Hep. C to be transmitted through sexual contact.
Most adults infected with the hepatitis B virus fully recover and develop life-long immunity. Between 2% and 10% of individuals infected as adults will become chronic carriers, which means they will be infectious to others and can develop chronic liver damage.
For immunisation, three injections are given over a period of 3 - 6 months. Immunity should last for at least 5 years.
Hepatitis C
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by the same ways as hepatitis B (see above).
Current evidence suggests that only about 20% of individuals who have been infected with the hepatitis C virus appear to clear the virus from the blood, whilst about 80% will remain infected and can pass on the virus to others.'

The Liver & Hepatitis
From the website: 'The liver is located in the upper right hand side of the abdomen, mostly behind the rib cage. The liver of an adult normally weighs close to three pounds. The liver performs the following vital functions:
1. The liver helps purify the blood by changing harmful chemicals into harmless ones. The source of these chemicals can be external, such as medications or alcohol, or internal, such as ammonia or bilirubin. Typically, these harmful chemicals are broken down into smaller chemicals or attached to other chemicals that then are eliminated from the body in the urine or stool.
2. The liver produces many important substances, especially proteins that are necessary for good health.
3. The liver stores many sugars, fats and vitamins until they are needed elsewhere in the body.
4. The liver builds smaller chemicals into larger, more complicated chemicals that are needed elsewhere in the body. An example of this type of function is the manufacture of cholesterol.
When the liver is inflamed, it does not perform these functions well, which brings about many of the symptoms, signs, and problems associated with hepatitis.'

Types D, E, F, and G Hepatitis
From the website: 'There also are viral hepatitis types D, E, F (not confirmed yet), and G. The most important of these at present is the hepatitis D virus (HDV). It is a small virus that requires concomitant infection with hepatitis B to survive. HDV cannot survive on its own because it requires a protein that the hepatitis B virus makes to enable it to infect liver cells. The ways in which hepatitis D is spread are by shared needles among drug abusers, contaminated blood, and by sexual contact, essentially the same ways as for hepatitis B. The combination of delta and B virus infection is very difficult to treat.'
