Summary

Lolita is a colloquial term for an attractive or sexually precocious young girl.

The phrase comes from the infamous book Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, 1955. Humbert Humbert, the protagonist of the book falls in love and becomes sexually obsessed with a 12 year old girl. Although the subject may be controversial, Nabokov's book is held in high literary regard for its innovative style and astute comments on American culture. Rather than promoting pedophilia, it dramatically shows the tragedy of Humbert's obsession. The book has subsequently has been made into two films, by Stanley Kubrick (1962) and Adrian Lyne (1997).

'Lolita' is a very popular search on the Internet. It ranks in the top 40 sex related searches, higher than preteen (40,000) or child pornography (3,000).

The popularity is perhaps due to it being a 'safer' search than other phrases such as 'kiddie porn'. The results show that many people (men) find young women and girls sexually attractive. This suggests that our evolutionary instincts for beauty (which are based upon youth and health) are at odds with our cultural laws. In most countries in the world, it is illegal to have sexual relations with anyone under the age of consent (usually 16). To do so is considered abusive.

While we respect the cultural laws on consent and the protection of children, we also feel it is important to understand the truth of our evolved instincts (as a way of understanding our behaviour and problems society faces). This does not legitimise our instincts, but allows us to understand why and guide our behaviour morally in the future. For humans have also evolved a moral instinct - which the two main principles are do unto others and informed consent.

Vladimir Nabokov's book, Lolita shows that older people can fall in love and be sexually attracted to young teenagers / children. There is obviously a difference between a loving, mutually beneficial relationship and forced coercion (abuse). This however is a controversial view as it is commonly held that children cannot give consent and such a relationship betrays trust. Some people, such as Dr. Fred S. Berlin see that pedophilia is a sexual orientation (the constant sexual preference of children) which differs from sexual abuse.

Definitions of Pedophilia

Pedophilia, is the paraphilia of being sexually attracted primarily or exclusively to prepubescent or peripubescent children. A person with this attraction is called a pedophile or paedophile. The term pedophile is also used colloquially to denote significantly older adults who are sexually attracted to adolescents below the local age of consent, as well as those who have sexually abused a child.

The Vienna psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing in 1886, gave pedophilia the following characteristics:
* the sexual interest is toward children, either prepubescent or at the beginning of puberty
* sexual interest of children is the exclusive or primary one
* the sexual interest remains over time

Use of the term pedophile to describe all child sexual offenders is seen as problematic by some people, especially when viewed from a medical standpoint, as the majority of sex crimes against children are perpetrated by situational offenders rather than people sexually preferring prepubertal children.'

Jeff Pierson is a photographer who until recently, ran a business called Beautiful Super Models for portraits of aspiring models under 18.

The U.S. Department of Justice accuses Pierson, 43, of being a child pornographer - even though there's no evidence he has ever taken a single photograph of an unclothed minor. Rather, his models struck poses that were illegally provocative.

Pierson's child pornography indictment arises out of an FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigation of so-called child modeling sites, which have been the subject of a series of critical congressional hearings and news reports in the last few years.
