Introduction / Summary (2018): Hello and welcome to our Sexuality pages. While this is not a pornographic site, it is provocative - founded upon what people search on the Internet (which is very interesting!). We then relate this to our biological and cultural evolution.
Sex is obviously important to people - and if you want to improve your sexual relationships then knowing the truth about our human evolution is the best foundation. By opening our minds to a greater diversity of behaviors, this knowledge will help you creatively cultivate healthy pleasurable moral attitudes and sexy smutty relationships (free from religious guilt & cultural myths).
Support an open honest discussion on the truth of our sexual evolution and behaviour. If you support sex positive, moral, informed sexual behaviour please share this knowledge. (These pages have a diverse collection of fascinating information relating to our human sexual evolution so people will appreciate it - see our 'nice letters' page!).
Sincerely, Karene.

'What is a nymphomaniac? Anyone who has sex
more than you do.'
(attributed to Alfred Kinsey)
What is a Nymphomaniac? Are you a Nympho?
Is nymphomania a credible psychological disorder or just a healthy appetite for sex? Human sexual libido's are diverse and always changing. Who is to say what is normal sexual behaviour? What is excessive? The word 'nympho' tends to refer to females. Our Christian Western society depicts female sexuality as something shameful outside of heterosexual marriage. Is nymphomania an attempt to control and degrade female sexuality?
In the past women were called nymphomaniacs if they masturbated and were subject to all sorts of barbaric genital treatments (including shock therapy). Now, many evolutionary studies are showing that women and men have evolved strategies for both promiscuity and monogamy. See our webpage on Evolution & Promiscuity.
Below you will find some academic studies on nymphomania. I am interested to further explore how our biology and culture affects our understanding of nymphomaniacs.

Causes of Nymphomania: Psychological, Hormones
From the website: 'The term 'nymphomaniac' comes from the Greek word 'nymph' who were known as overtly sensual and sexual women in Greek folklore who actively pursued men for sex.
Nymphomania or Hypersexuality (as it is clinically known) is defined as sexual behavior at significant levels, or above 'normal' sexual frequency. However, because individual sex drive varies, it is a debated condition even from a clinical standpoint. Low libido is actually treated more frequently than an excessive sex drive.
Today, it is suspected the causes of nymphomania are mostly linked to a lack of impulse control in the brain. Some experts do believe that psychological and neurological conditions such as bipolar disorder and dementia or even trauma to the brain can cause hypersexuality. Neurological research is ongoing to determine if there is a correlation between the impulse control in the brain and a person’s sexual activity. Though most people believe sex drive is linked only to hormone levels, some believe the brain plays a large role in sexual behavior. The causes of nymphomaniacs’ behavior may never be completely known, but hypersexuality is a rare, but clinically accepted diagnosis for extreme sexual behavior.'

Analyse any human emotion, no matter how far it may be removed from the sphere of sex, and you are sure to discover somewhere the primal impulse, to which life owes its perpetuation. ... The primitive stages can always be re-established; the primitive mind is, in the fullest meaning of the word, imperishable. ... Mans most disagreeable habits and idiosyncrasies, his deceit, his cowardice, his lack of reverence, are engendered by his incomplete adjustment to a complicated civilisation. It is the result of the conflict between our instincts and our culture. (Sigmund Freud)
