Karene

Introduction / Summary (2018): Hello and welcome to our Sexuality pages. While this is not a pornographic site, it is provocative - founded upon what people search on the Internet (which is very interesting!). We then relate this to our biological and cultural evolution.
Sex is obviously important to people - and if you want to improve your sexual relationships then knowing the truth about our human evolution is the best foundation. By opening our minds to a greater diversity of behaviors, this knowledge will help you creatively cultivate healthy pleasurable moral attitudes and sexy smutty relationships (free from religious guilt & cultural myths).
Support an open honest discussion on the truth of our sexual evolution and behaviour. If you support sex positive, moral, informed sexual behaviour please share this knowledge. (These pages have a diverse collection of fascinating information relating to our human sexual evolution so people will appreciate it - see our 'nice letters' page!).
Sincerely, Karene.

Sexual Abuse Education & Prevention
Research Studies & Reports on the Abuse of Children, Women & Men, Harm Minimisation, Law, Harassment, Rape, Pedophilia, Incest

Summary

Sexual abuse is a very sensitive and serious issue in our society. This webpage is a collection of educational articles, research studies and reports about this topic. We believe quality, truthful information (based upon evolution rather than cultural myth and religion) is important for understanding what is sexual abuse, why does it exist and how it can be prevented in the future. Much harm has come to individuals, offenders, society and institutions (such as the Catholic church) from hiding this problem. Being aware and informed (knowing the truth about things) can help to minimise harm and prevent abuse.

Types of abuse discussed in this section are rape, incest, sexual abuse of men, women and children, pedophilia, domestic violence, harassment, prostitution & the slave trade. We also have information on sexual offenders, the law in different countries, age of consent and prevention strategies.

From an evolutionary perspective, it is interesting to consider why a particular abuse has occurred throughout human history and also within the larger animal kingdom e.g. rape. This in no way validates such behaviour, but allows us to understand why it exists so we can minimise harm in the future. Humans have also evolved a moral instinct, of which two central pillars must be Informed Consent, and Do Not Harm Others.

Based upon what people search on the internet, rape is the most significant search with 33,000 /day, ranked top 60. The high interest in children on the internet is best illustrated with 'preteen' (40,000, ranked top 40). Child sexuality is a very controversial subject in our modern society. Laws in most countries state that any sexual relationship with someone under the age of consent (generally 16) is statutory rape and abuse. Most people would appreciate there is a difference between a loving relationship and brutal, forced coercion (but this is quite a controversial view when dealing with children).

We hope the following academic articles and websites help to educate people, may prevent abuse and offer an open, honest dialogue about problems facing our troubled world.

Definition of Rape: Occurrence, Fantasy, Moralism

From the website: 'Rape is forced, non-consenting sexual activity. This includes date rape where the force, even it not violent, is still employed. Rape is best described as a paraphilia that involves violent sex.

An especially damaging piece of moralist misunderstanding is the traditional blame placed on the rape victim herself. Many people still believe that raped women "asked for it" or did not exercise enough caution. Rape until the 1970s thrived on prudery, misunderstanding, and silence.

Available studies suggest that men who rape are marked off by significant and striking differences. Most studies have found that convicted rapists exhibiting unusually poor social skills in interacting with members of the opposite sex (Ellis 1989:53).'

Definition of Sexual Harassment

From the website: 'Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.'

Evolution & Incest

An academic essay from the Center for Evolutionary Psychology, which discusses the work of the Finnish sociologist and anthropologist Edward Westermarck (from the late 19th century).

From the essay: 'Westermarck proposed that a mechanism designed to cause the development of sibling incest avoidance was built into human nature. He hypothesized that, as the product of such a mechanism, children who are reared in close physical proximity during early childhood develop a sexual aversion toward one another later in adulthood (Westermarck, 1891/1921).'

Antisexuality & Child Sexual Abuse

From the essay: 'Our current sexual abuse system promotes an antisexual view of human sexuality. This is seen in the depiction of sex as bad in sexual abuse prevention programs, the readiness to define a sexual or affectionate interaction as abusive, the criminalization of childhood sexual behavior, and the genitalization of human sexuality. The consequences of this are likely to be negative for children, adults and society.'

The Rind, Tromovitch & Bauserman Report: Examining Trauma / Harm in Child Sexual Abuse

Published in June 1998, this academic report created huge controversy as it questions the assumption that victims of sexual abuse are significantly traumatized.

From the essay: 'Self-reported reactions to and effects from child sexual abuse (CSA) indicated that negative effects were neither pervasive nor typically intense, and that men reacted much less negatively than women. Basic beliefs about CSA in the general population were not supported.'

The Stockholm Syndrome: Loving an Abuser

This essay by Joseph M. Carver, (PhD, Clinical Psychologist in practice in Ohio) describes the formation of bonds between victim and abuser. A Stockholm bank hold up in 1973 where the hostages supported their captors, led to the psychological condition known as the 'Stockholm Syndrome'.

However, emotional bonding with captors is not new to psychology. It is recognised in studies of other abusive situations such as child abuse, domestic violence, prisoners of war, cults, incest, controlling relationships.'

Child Pornography & Abuse of Children Unclear

If someone downloads child pornography onto their computer, is that an indication they're a pedophile, or might become one in the future? That question is gaining the attention of forensic psychiatrists as never before, thanks to recent legislation making possession of Internet child pornography a federal crime.
According to Dr. Charles L. Scott, associate professor of clinical psychiatry, two federally commissioned studies, one in 1970 and 1980, failed to find a strong correlation between viewing erotica and acting out sexually.

Celibacy, Pedophilia and the Church

From the essay: 'Sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests is and has been a problem known to every bishop in America. Many or most of these bishops and their chancery officials have been, unwittingly or not, accomplices of child abusers.

... Celibacy is not the cause of pedophilia. But celibacy as idealized, institutionalized and mandated by the church provides an ideal environment for those men whose sexuality (and personality) development has been arrested at an immature level leading to their inability to establish intimate relations with another adult.'

MySpace and Sex Offenders

He confirmed 744 sex offenders with MySpace profiles, after an examination of about a third of the data. Of those, 497 are registered for sex crimes against children. At least 243 of the 497 have convictions in 2000 or later.'

Study of Sexually Aggressive Children

From the website: 'Incidents of young children displaying sexually aggressive behavior towards others appear to be on the increase, and exposure to online pornography is a key factor, according to a study in Australia.

The report differentiates between sexual behavior in children regarded as normal and developmentally appropriate - the 'you show me yours and I'll show you mine' kind of games - and activity that was aggressive, secretive, coercive and usually involved an age difference between the perpetrator and victim.'

A Safe Internet: Education & Protection of Children

From the website: 'The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children found that one in five children age 10-17 who regularly use the Internet have received a sexual solicitation while online. One in four were unwillingly exposed to images of naked people or people having sex.
The National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families believes it is important for people to be educated on Internet safety issues and ways to deal with inappropriate content and contact. Education and parental involvement is vital, but use of technology to monitor, block or filter content is extremely helpful.'
