Human Evolution: A History of Sex

Evidence that people have been promiscuous for a long time

Lotharios everywhere will be pleased to hear that monogamy does not appear to be a natural human state. That, at least, is the conclusion of a study conducted by Michael Hammer at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and just published in Nature Genetics. By examining the DNA of living people, Dr Hammer and his colleagues have found that far fewer men than women pass their genes on to subsequent generations.

Study of the Brain while watching Pornography

By studying men watching pornographic videos, researchers in Canada have pinpointed areas of the brain that become active when the men tried to avoid being stimulated. In evolutionary terms, these regions of restraint (the prefrontal cortex) are newer than the more primitive areas where the sexual urges arise in the first place (the limbic system).

Male Sexual Evolution: Sperm, Competition and Violence

Violence is predominately a male phenomena. When it comes to sperm makers, success is likely to crown those who outcompete their rivals, and so, in species after species, it is the males who are larger, nastier, more likely to be armed with lethal weaponry and a violent disposition to match. Natural selection has outfitted males with the tools for success in male-male competition, much of it violent.

Cultural Myths About Male Sexuality

The myths regarding male sexuality have been particularly tenacious because men have traditionally not talked about their sexual feelings and experiences honestly and openly with each other.
Myths debunked include penis size, that men are always willing and want sex, very few men are virgins, sex requires an erection, sex is over when a man comes, all orgasms are earth shattering, men in relationships don't masturbate.

Why do Men have Nipples?

From the essay: 'During the very early stages of fetal life all humans are basically bisexual. Among other things, you have two sets of primitive plumbing - one male, one female. Only one set develops into a mature urogenital system, but you retain traces of the other for the rest of your life.

It's tempting, therefore, to say that male nipples are yet another vestige of your carefree bisexual youth. Male nipples though are not vestigial. They're full-sized and fully equipped with blood vessels, nerves, and all the usual appurtenances of functioning organs. .. Both male and female babies are born with the main milk ducts intact - the gland that produces milk is there in the male, but it remains undeveloped unless stimulated by the female hormone, estrogen.'

Human Hormones: Androgens

From the website: 'Androgens are sex hormones produced primarily by a male's testes, but are also produced in small amounts by the female's ovaries and the adrenal gland.
Androgens help trigger the development of the testes and penis in the male fetus. They jump start the process of puberty and influence the development of facial, body and pubic hair, deepening of the voice, and muscle development, the male secondary sex characteristics. After puberty, androgens, specifically testosterone, play a role in the regulation of the sex drive.'

Masturbation vs Sexual Intercourse: A Study of the Differences in Semen. A Guide for Infertility Clinics

Six semen samples were collected from each of 38 infertile men via masturbation and sexual intercourse using a semen collection device (SCD).
The volume of seminal plasma, total sperm count, sperm motility, and percentage of normal spermatozoa were significantly higher in samples collected at intercourse than masturbation. In addition, the markers of the secretory function of the prostate and the outcome of sperm function tests were also significantly higher.

Alfred Kinsey on Male Homosexuality

'The data indicates that at least 37% of the male population has some homosexual experience between the beginning of adolescence and old age. Among the males who remain unmarried until the age of 35, almost 50 % have had a homosexual experience.
It is true that there are persons in the population whose histories are exclusively heterosexual and exclusively homosexual. But the record shows that there is a considerable portion of the population whose members have combined both homosexual and heterosexual experience.'

Study of Sexual Arousal in Gay & Heterosexual Men & Women

Three decades of research on men's sexual arousal show patterns that clearly track sexual orientation - gay men overwhelmingly become sexually aroused by images of men and heterosexual men by images of women.
In contrast to men, both homosexual and heterosexual women showed a bisexual pattern of psychological as well as genital arousal. That is, heterosexual women were just as sexually aroused by watching female stimuli as by watching male stimuli, even though they prefer having sex with men rather than women.

Study of Aging in Men & Hormones: Decrease in Sexual Desire, Arousal & Activity

Significant age related decreases in sexual desire, sexual arousal and activity, and increases in erectile problems were noted.

Lifestyle Changes Can Improve Erectile Dysfunction

A study reports that erectile dysfunction is significantly and independently associated with age, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and lack of physical activity.
As many as 18 million men may be affected with erectile dysfunction in the United States. The recent development of effective oral medications to treat erectile dysfunction has raised awareness, however lifestyle changes such as exercise and nutrition may prevent erectile function.

The Easy Erection: Sexologists Experiment with Viagra

An interesting essay written by two sexologists who experiment with Viagra. They are concerned that the emotional or psychological aspects of erectile dysfunction (stress, anxiety, disconnection from partner, lack of communication) are not being addressed by doctors prescribing Viagra (which helps the physical ailment).
Note: It is very difficult to prove that sexual disorders are physical or psychological. They are an interconnected mix of both.

Viagra: How it Works, Statistics & Side Effects

As Viagra moves into the bloodstream, it starts to block an enzyme called PDE-5. Blocking the enzyme eventually increases blood flow to areas where PDE-5 is most heavily concentrated - the penis, nose and skin. Diminished blood flow to the penis is the cause of most erectile dysfunction problems.
