Introduction

Hello! I am glad that you are visiting this page, as sacred sexuality offers a deeper understanding of our sexual nature (rather than pornography - which may be how you found this site!).

I hope people who are seeking to improve their sexual relationships (and perhaps to understand their connection to the universe!) find information and food for thought here. I think truthful, creative cultivation of the individual is really important (in mind, body, relationships). This ultimately is the foundation of our sexuality website.

This webpage has brief summaries on Sacred Sexuality, Kama Sutra, Tantric Sex, Goddess Worship and Yoga. Follow the links to read more in depth information or see our related pages (bottom of this page).

Cosmic Cheers,
Karene

"The word “sacred” is used here to say that our sexual energy is precious, a treasure to be held dear. "The word “sacred” is used here to say that our sexual energy is precious, a treasure to be held dear. Sexual energy is the generative, creative force of the universe. Considering it sacred means to simply live, without restraining or suppressing natural tendencies. Sacred sexuality also means practicing spiritual sexual methods for the restoration of youthfulness, optimum health, happiness and an expression of an overall affirmation of life." Sacred Sexuality & Spirituality

Greek Goddess AphroditeSacred Sexuality can be interpretated in many ways. Generally it is recognised as a fusion of sexuality with spirituality. Spirituality too, is subjective and open to interpretation. Personally, I understand it as an intimate relationship to the One (which is a spiritual / mind and material connection).

In Sacred Sexuality the body and our sexual energies may be considered divine, connected to the One interconnected reality. Here we may find liberation, peace, strength, confidence and love.

By recognising sexuality as sacred, people tend to put more effort into their relationships, creativity and love making (therefore improving their sex life). Greater awareness of our own and other's higher sexual potential may be awakened. As the philosopher Peter Vardy writes;

Psychology has made clear the intimate link between sexuality, personality and human development as well as the need for human integration. Sexuality is an essential part of human nature and each person has to come to wholeness by being able to accept and balance the different aspects of their nature. Sexuality and spirituality may be seen to be connected. (Vardy, The Puzzle of Sex, 1997)

Kama Sutra - The Art of Love

"Praised be the three aims of life, virtue (dharma), prosperity (artha), and love (kama), which are the subject of this work."
(The Complete Kama Sutra, 1994)

Brief History & Introduction to Kama Sutra

Ancient Indian sages composed the Kama Shastra on the basis of the Vedas. It is preserved today in the form of the Kama Sutra written down by the sage Vatsyayana sometime between the first and sixth century A.D. The Kama Sutra is recognised as the true surviving text of the original Kama Shastra.

The Kama Shastra was one of three ancient Indian texts concerning the aims of life. It should be understood within the context of the Artha Shastra and the Dharma Shastra (which were written in Sanskrit, seventh century B.C.). As Alain Danielou confirms;

Life necessitates three kinds of activity: to assure its survival, its means of existence, and its nourishment; to realise its reproduction according to forms of activity generally connected with sexuality; and, lastly, to establish rules of behaviour that allow different individuals to perform their roles within the framework of the species. In human society, this is represented as three necessities, three aims of life: material goods (artha) assure survival; erotic practice (kama) assures the transmission of life; and rules of behaviour, a moral nature (dharma), assure the cohesion and duration of the species. (The Complete Kamasutra, translated by Alain Danielou, 1994)

The Kama Sutra is not a pornographic work. First and foremost, it is a picture of the art of living for the civilised and refined citizen, completing in the sphere of love, eroticism and the pleasures of life. (The Complete Kamasutra, Alain Danielou 1994)

The Kama Sutra is commonly misunderstood by Western society as a sex manual of adventurous sex positions. Whilst it does contain such information, it is much more than that - the cultivation of the individual to be a wise and sensual person.

The aim of the Sixty Four Arts of the Kama Sutra is not merely to be a good wife, but to be a skillful, playful, understanding, refined, sexual, beautiful and intelligent woman. The Kama Sutra also expresses cultivation of the male, his understanding of female nature and the importance of cultivating sensual moods and intimacy. The ancient Indians show great attention to detail of smell, light, music, food, drink and touch before intercourse can begin.

Below you will find a collection of pictures and quotes from the Kama Sutra.

Kama Sutra Quotes & Pictures

And now for the love postures with which sculptors adorn our temple walls.
When a couple make love standing, or leaning against a wall or a pillar,it is called Sthita (Steadied)

When the woman sits in her lover's cradled hands, her arms around his neck,
Kama Sutra Picturesthighs gripping his waist, her feet pushing back and forth against a wall,
it is Avalambitaka (Suspended) (Kama Sutra, 1883)

Eroticism of Tantra
Information on Tantric Sex, Meaning of Tantra

Tantric SexPhilosophy of Tantra / Tantric SexPhilosophy of Tantra / Tantric Sex

Tantra embraces the natural energies of the bodies and connects you with cosmic, universal energy. It is becoming one with the other, and the very cosmos itself. (Swami Nostradamus Virato)

The word 'tantra' is related to the concept of weaving and its derivatives (thread, web, fabric, etc.) hinting at the interwovenness of things and actions, the interdependence of all that exists.. The scriptures which in Buddhism go under the name of Tantra are invariably of a mystic nature, i.e. , trying to establish an inner relationship of things: the parallelism of microcosm and macrocosm, mind and universe, ritual and reality, the world of matter and the world of spirit. This is the essence of Tantrism. (Lama Anagarika Govinda, 1969)

This is the essence of Tantrism. (Lama Anagarika Govinda, 1969)Tantra / Tantric Philosophy is founded on the interconnection and unity of the universe. The human being does not exist in isolation, but is part of the One and is connected to all other matter in the universe. The human body in Tantra is seen as a microcosm of the universe (all that exists in the universe, exists also in the human body). The path of enlightenment is through recognising our connection to the dynamic unity of reality.

Through the intimate connection of body and universe in Tantric thought, we can understand how sex and orgasm can be seen as a cosmic and divine experience.
Sex may be used by Tantric's to heighten their energies / consciousness / connection to the universe which can aid healing (peace, wholeness, power, bliss) and growth (self esteem).

'In Tantra, sex is used as the cosmic union of opposites, to create the polarity charge that connects with the primordial energy from which everything arises in the universe .. the totality of All.' (https://www.askmen.com/sex/sextip/43_love_tip.html)

Worshipping the Goddess Within

Sexual energy is the generative, creative force of the universe. Considering it sacred means to simply live, without restraining or suppressing natural tendencies.Goddess worship is the connection of feminine energy to the greater energy of the Universe. It is a connection to the source of beauty and life. It can be used to empower women sexually.

Being a Goddess can be explored through notions of beauty, power, peace, love, intelligence, enlightenment, nature and motherhood. As a goddess she is to be worshipped (by herself and others), her body a holy temple.

Many religions have female deities and goddesses, for example Kundalini, Kali, Tara and Shakti in Hinduism.

Yoga & Sex
Yoga Positions, Benefits of Yoga for your Sex Life

Yoga AsanaAlthough the advanced yogis practice celibacy, for the common person, yoga can greatly enhance your sex life through overall well being. Yoga is a broad holistic practice which is beneficial to both physical and mental health through yoga poses (asanas), breathing techniques and meditation.

By being more flexible, graceful, fitter and stronger with greater clarity, calm and a radiant glow - one's sexuality is bound to feel the benefits. Studies show that yoga stimulates the pituitary, adrenal, thyroid, and sex glands. This helps to create a feeling of contentment, prevents premature ageing and can lengthen sexual virility well into old age.

Below are some quotes on yoga and sexuality.

Yoga's view of sex is the same as of every other issue - moderation. Yoga considers sex to be a natural function, very beneficial in a loving relationship and, of course, essential for the continuation of the human race.

Yogis warn against overindulgence in sex since they consider this will deplete the life force. They state that the sexual secretions contain very concentrated life force and nutrients, since they contain the seeds of life. Depletion of life force results in a reduced vitality level and reduced resistance to disease. It also retards progress from the practice of yoga. A whole field of yoga called Tantric Yoga or Kundalini Yoga is concerned with harnessing the sexual power. Yoga enables one to get into meaningful relationships and enjoy the process, at the same time provides a path to use the powerful energy involved in sex.

The yogis consider that normal sexual function occurs when the reproductive system is in a state of optimum health. They have found that the most effective way of attaining this optimum health state is by doing yoga asanas and breathing exercises. Those who are physiologically weak and partially or wholly impotent may restore potency as they regain their physical health. Those who approach sexual matters nervously rather than relaxed may profit from previous relaxing yogic exercises.

Marriage counselors suggest that a relaxed condition is one of the essentials for a harmonious sex relationship because when hurried and strained it leaves the couple (the woman especially) dissatisfied and irritated, adversely affecting her entire well being. Indra Devi, author of many books on yoga, remarked that "The wives of several of my students have often told me that since their husbands had taken up Yoga exercises, their marital relationships had undergone remarkable changes."
