Men's Sexual Health: Erectile Dysfunction
Disorders, Information, Treatment, Causes, Exercise, Diet, Drugs

'It has been recently estimated that more than 152 million men worldwide experienced erectile dysfunction in 1995, and that this number will rise to approximately 322 million by 2025.' 1

Study on Erectile Dysfunction & Cardiovascular Disease

Preliminary findings from clinicians at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), show that men with erectile dysfunction are more likely to have cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease affects approximately 40,000 Canadian men annually.

"Our study suggests, that erectile dysfunction, particularly in young men, may be an early warning sign of heart disease and stroke," says MUHC Director of Clinical Epidemiology and lead investigator, Dr. Steven Grover.
Dr. Grover and his colleagues evaluated more than 4 000 men. They compared the risk of erectile dysfunction among patients with and without cardiovascular disease. "We found that the presence of cardiovascular disease was strongly associated with erectile dysfunction," says Dr. Grover.

Exercise & Diet Can Improve Male Sexual Function

From the website: 'In a study published in the The American Journal of Medicine, (Feb. 2007), researchers report that erectile dysfunction was significantly and independently associated with age, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lack of physical activity. There was an especially high prevalence of erectile dysfunction among men with hypertension and diabetes, suggesting that screening for erectile dysfunction in these patients may be warranted. Researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Hospital analyzed data from 2126 men who participated in the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

As many as 18 million men may be affected with erectile dysfunction in the United States. The recent development of effective oral medications to treat erectile dysfunction has raised awareness and furnished treatment options, however lifestyle changes like increase of physical activity, stricter dietary control and other measures for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes may prevent decrease in erectile function.

Sexual dysfunction is most prevalent in men with illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke and depression. 'The secret to preserving sexuality is to stay healthy and to build healthy relationships - and both require a series of wise choices throughout life.' (Harvey B. Simon, M.D.)

Evolution, Human Reproduction & Fertilization: Sperm Competition & the Penis

A very interesting essay from the journal of Evolutionary Psychology on sperm competition and its role in shaping the human penis, (size, length, width, forceful ejaculation), evolutionary strategies for successful fertilization i.e. semen displacement and coagulation. On sexual intercourse and evolutionary benefits of deep penis thrusting, function of the foreskin and effects of circumcision, premature ejaculation, female reproductive strategies i.e. copulation with multiple partners, human sexual behaviour and wife rape (males having sex with their partner if suspecting them of infidelity).
