Cartoon porn enjoys greater creative freedom of artistic expression than conventional pornography (which uses real people). Such creative freedom can be used in good or bad ways. Some adult cartoons may be erotic works of art, or beautiful, magical fantasy. As a general theme though, a lot of cartoon porn on the internet depicts violent and degrading scenes (particularly to women). Subjects such as incest, bestiality and rape are common. Girls are generally youthful sex objects, 'whores', oblivious to their clothes falling off. Both male and female genitalia are often exaggerated in size.

The psychological effects of viewing violent pornography are unknown. Some studies suggest that men may be more positive to rape and callous towards women after viewing violent porn. Though masturbating to violent pornography may result in a calmer state of mind with the beneficial effects of orgasm.

The relationship between viewing pornography and its effect on physical human behaviour (fantasy vs. reality) is also unknown. The debate between rape and pornography has been going on for decades, yet the evidence on either side remains inconclusive. The effects of pornography are interesting to explore, as it presents many ethical (and confronting) questions.
For example, could use of cartoon child pornography be encouraged for pedophiles as a harm minimization strategy? As these adult cartoons are created on computers, it does not involve real people. Is it therefore a more ethical form of pornography?

Virtual Child Pornography & the U.S. Supreme Court

From the website: 'Child pornography is an exception to First Amendment freedoms because it exploits and abuses our nation's youth. The latest trend in that industry is 'virtual child' pornography which does not use real children or images of real identifiable children. When the object of desire is not a child, but merely a combination of millions of computer pixels crafted by a skilled artist, can the government ban this allegedly victimless creation?

In Ashcroft v. The Free Speech Coalition, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the government may not criminalize such action because the production of 'virtual child' pornography does not sexually abuse an actual child. The Court rejected the government's argument that 'virtual child' pornography encourages pedophiles to abuse children. ... The Court noted that 'virtual child pornography is not intrinsically related to the sexual abuse of children' and that 'the causal link is contingent and indirect'.
The government argued that 'virtual child' pornography could have the tendency to persuade the audience to commit crimes. The Court struck down this argument, stating, 'the prospect of crime, however, by itself does not justify laws suppressing protected speech. Even if virtual pornography encourages unlawful acts, it is not a sufficient reason for banning it.'
The government also argued that eliminating the market for actual child pornography was a sufficient reason for the Court to uphold the constitutionality of the law. The Court disagreed and noted that the market for actual child pornography might be eliminated if there was an alternative source. 'If virtual images were identical to illegal child pornography, the illegal images would be driven from the market by the indistinguishable substitutes. Few pornographers would risk prosecution by abusing real children if fictional, computerized images would suffice.'

Virtual Child Pornography: Eroticism of Inequality
